Go Glamping by Paula

Is camping one of your favorite past times? Ours too... But it is definitely a past time! The older we get, the less appealing sleeping on the ground in humid Texas weather with big mosquitoes and smelly clothes starts to sound. But the whole connecting with nature, and getting away from it all, and cooking around the bonfire part of camping is something we definitely miss!

Summer is a great time to take the kids and camp out by the lake, but the problem is we want the nature without all the hassle of everything camping comes with. Solution? Glamping!

cocoon tree bed- designboom

Glamping - Glamorous Camping. Yup, it's a thing. And we love it.

You're probably asking yourself, isn't glamping just staying in a hotel? No way! Think tree houses, tipis, vans, & tents.

If you're in Texas you're in luck, because it is the place to be for glamping! Below are some of our favorite local spots we're swooning over...

treehouse1

First up, a treehouse, or should we say, an adult treehouse. Right outside of Austin, in an ancient cypress tree, you can have it all...even a waterfall bath.

sinya
sinya2

Next, a modified safari tent in the Texas Hill Country, listed by many publications as one of the top 5 places in the country. Relaxing in a hammock on the tent porch that overlooks remote waterfalls? Sounds pretty ideal to me.

ecodome

Near Big Bend there's this secluded eco-dome. Yes we didn't know that was a thing either. But it's pretty cute, inside and out, and totally run on solar panels. The stars at night are definitely big and bright here...talk about a getaway!

Then there's El Cosmico in Marfa, TX. Need we say more?

el cosmico

El Cosmico is the king of glamping. They basically invented it. You can take your pick here--teepees, safari tents, yurts, or camper vans. They have it ALL.

el cosmico teppee2

And the interiors of each unit are totally unique. They've made native-american meets southwestern chic a thing. Needless to say, this place is on the top of our list.

el cosmico yurt
yurt

Needless to say, this place is on the top of our list.

el cosmico teepee

So have you changed your mind about camping yet? Because we definitely have!

For an easy way to explore all the unique glamping opportunities out there, glampinghub.com is a neat website that allows you to search by city/state/country or type of glamping you want to experience- from Yurts to Igloos!

Elementary School Career Day by Paula

Career day at Valley View Elementary

Career day at Valley View Elementary in Austin, Texas (supporting the VVE Booster Club) is one of my favorite events of the year. We gather old kids magazines and discontinued fabrics from a few local stores, draw up a floor plan and off we go.

This year we had 31 kids (4th and 5th graders) choose "Interior Designer" as a career they wanted to learn more about. Some of the other careers that were available were Spa Owner, Photographer, Realtor, Wedding Planner, Doctor, Veterinarian, SWAT Team and Mounted Police. Can you imagine going up against policemen on horses for a tweens attention?!

We handed the kids a floor plan and a furniture template and requested they come up with their "Dream Bedroom" to present to the class at the end of the meeting time. It is amazing what those kids came up with in 30 minutes. Some preferred to draw only, while others picked fabric swatches and combed through every magazine I brought for ideas.

We had ladders to lofts above the beds, full functioning rooms that the kids would never have to leave except to request additional food. One girl even added on to the 18 x 25 room because she couldn't plan her bedroom without knowing where the bathroom door would be located.

Thank you to Valley View for allowing me to spend time with their wonderful and creative kids. I had a great time and can't wait to come back next year!

Below are some of the fun drawings and kids hard at work. There are some budding Designers and Architects in this mix. I will be able to say "I knew them when..."

Top 5 Ceiling Fans of 2015 by Paula

Paula Ables Interiors would like to celebrate our top 5 favorite Ceiling Fans of 2015. How did we decide our favorites, you might ask?  We took a lot of key features into consideration:  Color, Texture, Aesthetics, and Function.

#1  Artemis XL5 Fan by MinkaAire

This striking fan is available in a variety of sizes and colors including transparent.  Our favorite is as pictured:  54", 5 Blade fan made from Distressed Koa Wood.  You can get it with or without the light.  A little on the pricier side of things, but we think its unique appearance and balance make it worth the expense.  This fan could be used in your more public spaces such as the Great Room or Game Room or it would be a nice addition to any Master Bedroom.

Ceiling fans

#2 Haiku Fan by Big Ass Fan Company

The Big Ass Fan Company has added Residential Interior fans to their list of successful and dramatic fans.  This fan is offered in a variety of sizes and color combinations as well.  We think the Caramel bamboo with black hardware (as pictured)give it a dramatic flare.  This fan tops the list as the priciest of the fans listed, but with a name and reputation like Big Ass Fan, I would expect no less.  This fan with its more contemporary, masculine look is great for a Game Room, Man Room or Office space.

Ceiling Fans

#3 Ariel Fan by Savoy House

The Ariel is available in a variety of sizes, but for color, this is it.  We love the unique styling of this fan with the addition of the "winglets" which help to produce 20% more airflow and 205 less energy consumption than comparable fans.  We like to use this fan in smaller rooms such as Secondary Bedrooms and Tv Rooms.

Ceiling Fans

#4 Bristol Fan by Quorum International

The Bristol fan is available in a variety of colors and can come with or without the lower light kit.  We like to see this fan with the light kit as pictured.  This fan is great in kids rooms and baby rooms where a nightlight might come in handy.  The upper area of the fan is a separate light that can be dimmed to a soft glow to provide a warm, cozy feeling to any room.

Ceiling Fans#5 Gyrette Double Fan by MinkaAire

The Gyrette Double fan is a wind producing machine!  This fan is outdoor rated, so it can be used on your outdoor sitting and dining areas as well as screened in patios.  This fan is also available in a variety of colors.  The individual fan heads are independently adjustable and you can have it function as one, two or three fans in one.  This fan provides hours of entertainment for the remote control lovers in your life. Ceiling fans

We understand that choosing the right ceiling fan for your room can be a challenge.  If you are in the market for a new one, check out one or our past blog called: 5 Tips for Picking a Ceiling Fan. There is more to the perfect fan and creating the perfect space than just the look of a fan.  Function is important too.  If you are in the market for adding some new lighting and would like a little help upgrading your room, give us a shout.  We would love to help you out.

6 Things to Consider when Selecting a New Rug by Guest User

Need a new rug for your home? Of course you do! I have good news and bad news for you. The Good News: There are thousands of rug options out there! The Bad News: There are thousands of rug options out there! The sky is the limit when looking for a new rug- and because of that, the available choices can seem overwhelming. Here are 3 things to consider when you are looking for a new rug which will help you narrow down your search. Rug collection2

1. Fiber Content of the rug:

You’ve spent time with your designer selecting the perfect pieces of furniture for your space, now you just need a rug to tie the room together! Consider your budget and your lifestyle to help narrow down your rug selection. Do you want a 100% wool rug? Or do you want to upgrade to a rug with silk fibers? Consider your lifestyle: If your kids are grown and your pets are well trained, a silk rug can be a gorgeous showpiece- but if you still have young ones running around with grape juice in their sippy cups- perhaps looking for a rug with nylon fibers is the most realistic option. Here is a little info about some of the most common fibers used in carpets:

  • Wool: Wool is a natural fiber that is durable, has good resiliency and good soil resistance; it is also naturally flame resistant. Wool carpets do require professional cleaning but with proper maintenance can last decades. Wool is not cheap and is often seen as an investment.
  • Silk: Silk is a natural fiber that creates a soft and luxurious hand. Silk is a strong fiber, but it can crush easily so it is better used in low-traffic settings. Silk dyes well so it is available in a wide range of vibrant colors. Silk is expensive so it is often blended with other fibers- often wool or nylon- to bring down cost and to add to its durability. Silk is also seen as an investment with the intentions of it lasting decades.
  • Nylon: Nylon is a synthetic fiber that is very durable, very resilient, offers good stain resistance, has limitless color options, and is easier to clean than natural fibers. Nylon fibers are used to create the look and hand similar to wool- so you can get the look of wool, but for less. Nylon is great for high traffic areas so it is a common choice for many households.

2. Types of Rugs available:

  • Tufted Rugs: These rugs make up the majority of rugs on the market today. The tufted material, which is usually man-made is injected into a backing material, then bonded to another material to add strength.
  • Knotted Rugs: These rugs can be man-made or machine made, depending on its origins. The threads making up the rug are pulled through a backing material into various intricate patterns. These are available in a variety of sizes and colors.
  • Woven Rugs: These rugs are created on a loom. You will see both loop pile (aka Berber) and cut pile or a combination of the two with this style or rug. Hand loomed rugs take many months, sometimes years to create. Each one is truly one of a kind. This is the most expensive of the various types of rugs available.
  • Hooked Rugs: The hooked rug is a style where pieces of fabric or threads are pulled through a burlap backing to crate a simple rug. This tends to be one of the least expensive types of rugs, yet can add a little arts and crafts charm to your room.
  • Flat Weave Rugs: Threads or long pieces of material are being woven in and out of a cotton backing instead of tied around it. You can find these rugs made by hobbyists in various fabrics such as denim and old pieces of clothing.
  • Embroidered Rugs: Rather than being formed on a loom, embroidered rugs are hand stitched onto a cotton or linen backing, held taut by a frame. This style used to be a favorite pass-time for the olden days, but the advent of steel needles allowed embroidered rugs to be mass produced. However, hand embroidered rugs can still be found today.

3. Placement of the rug and traffic:

Before you begin your search for a new rug, consider what room it is going in and how your furniture is arranged. In a formal living room where there's not much traffic, you may want to splurge on a real piece of art at your feet and go with a truly custom silk rug. The shape of the rug is dictated by how your furniture is arranged. Do you have an L-shape with a sofa along one side and 2 chairs on an adjacent side? That calls for a rectangular rug. On the other hand, two conversational sofas that face each creates more of a square layout? Determining exactly how you want your furniture to be placed - and finalizing the selection of your furniture - is important before selecting a rug for your room.

4. Size of the rug:

This is the most important factor in choosing a rug for any space. It is easy to underestimate the size of rug that your room requires. Once you’ve determined how your furniture will be arranged, take a look at your space and figure out what size of rug you need. For a living room seating area a good rule of thumb is to have all the legs of the furniture on the rug or only the front legs of your seating on the rug.

Living Rug Dining rug

If you are putting a rug under your dining table, you want to make sure that someone can slide a chair out to sit down without the back legs falling off the edge of the rug. Don’t force your furniture to fit on a common sized rug. If the ideal rug size for your living room is 11’ x 15’ you may need a custom made rug if you can’t find a pre-made one in that size. If a fully custom made rug is out of your budget, going to a carpet showroom is your next best option for a semi-custom rug. Have your designer assist you with picking a carpet that compliments your room and your lifestyle. You can order the carpet and have a professional cut and serge the edges to create the perfect rug just for your living room!

02 Living and Dining Combo

In the living room pictured above we wanted all the furniture to be sitting on top of the rugs. This is a good example of how you can pick a carpet and have it cut and the edges serged to create an area rug. Both the living room and dining room rugs in this picture are actually carpets we had custom made into rugs to perfectly fit each space

5. Buy rugs made by adult artisans:

If you are looking for a hand woven rug, make sure to look for the GoodWeave label. The rugs most likely to have been made from child labor are the cheapest Indian, Nepalese and Afghan rugs. When in doubt, just ask your designer. They will lead you in the right direction.

6. Know your focal point:

  • Furniture is the focal point: If the focal point of a room is the furniture, it is best to go with soft colors and tones, with many plain rugs being good choices. This can also be a sculpted pile or a repetitive pattern, as long as it stays subtle.
  • Fireplace is the focal point: If the focal point of a room is a fireplace, it is usually best to choose a rug that has a subdued all-over pattern or a plain rug that compliments the surroundings so that it does not become a distraction. Once again, you can get away with a subtle pattern.
  • Art is the focal point: If you have a great piece of art, it will always steal the show. Compliment the artwork with your rug by selecting one of the accent colors in the piece. If it is blue and white with a small splash of orange, go for the orange rug to make your artwork pop.
  • Rug is the focal point: If the focal point is the rug, the sky is the limit (assuming you still match everything else that is going on in the room). Find a fun pattern, vibrant color mixes, stripes, circles, anything goes. Put a glass top coffee table on it and throw some solid color accent pillows on the sofa and you have a room full of energy and style.

6 steps to consider when designing a kids closet by Paula

Kid's closets are an interesting challenge.  They are often the smallest closets in the house and you are trying to hide the most items in there.  I hear many parents say, "it is just a kid's closet, they don't need anything fancy".  We understand where they are coming from, but disagree with that way of thinking.  A child's closet is the "organization training wheels" to teach your kids a few important life skills at an early age.  For this blog we collaborated with one of the owners of California Closets Texas Hill Country, Jill Siegel. California Closets

1. Make sure you have enough shelves:

Here is the big question-What hangs and what folds?  Depending on your child's stage in life, the answer could be very different to this question.  With smaller kids you tend to fold more of their tiny clothes. The older they get, the more you hang.

20100322_cc_lee_1728_8bit

2.  Make sure there is a place for dirty clothes:

Think of this closet design as teaching your child one of the more important life skills you can teach-organization.  There is a place for everything and everything has its place.  Where do the dirty clothes go?  Where do the clean clothes go? There is no doubt the answer to this question when you take the time to plan ahead.

California Closets

3.  Make sure there is plenty of room for toys:

Kids are more likely to put things away if there are specific places for their toys to go.  Create shelf spaces in your child's closet that are fitted for specific items, such as bins for putting smaller toys and larger openings for some of their larger toys.

California Closets

4.  Plan for your closet design to adjust as your child grows:

No matter the size of your child's closet, organization abilities should grow with your child as their wants and needs change.  As an infant you may need more shelf spaces for folded clothes, blankets and diapers. As a toddler you need more space for toy organization and a few additional hanging clothes. Finally, as a teen the need to organize toys goes away and gives way to the need for drawers to hide large folding items and shoe bins.

01INFAD 01KID (1)
01TEEN

5.  Make it fun:

Closets don't have to have drab white walls and painted shelves, they can be fun like the photo below.  Take your child's closet and make it a space they want to spend a little time in.  They will enjoy all the fun little details you can add for personalization.  There are no set in stone rules here.  If your child has 10 dress-up outfits with matching plastic shoes, plan a space for them that they can reach.  Your child will enjoy knowing where all of their favorite things are and you will enjoy a cleaner room.

06_TEEN_product_05

6. Don't forget to add your organization accessories:

Take advantage of all of the fun organizational items available when creating your child's closet.  The more fun you make it, the more likely they are to use it properly.  A few examples of items that are available include sloped shoe shelves and wire drawers. You can also take it that extra step and add down lighting and glass shelves so some of your areas can appear as decorative display.

California Closets 12_BabyCloset_RevShelfBaskets_Hero

Who says teaching organization and life skills can't be fun?  We think California Closet's concept for children's closets is well thought out, creative and fun.  Our advice to you if you are thinking about hiring a professional to organize your child's closet:  Find a designer that has kids and understands your goals and growth plans.  Thank you to California Closets for providing the wonderful photography above and thank you to Jill for all the great advice for creating and organizing your child's space.

Are you looking to update your child's space, but the thought of touching it makes you swoon, we are here to help.  Our design team has collaborated with California Closets on many different occasions and would love the opportunity to work with you on yours.  Give us a shout.

Top 5 Favorite Side Chairs of 2015 by Paula

Chairs, chairs, chairs!  Where do we even begin?  I have always had an obsession with chairs that can be seen in my office. From a chair eye chart at my desk, to Eames chair stamps and even a good size collection of miniature chairs from various mid century designers.  Side chairs are an important part of any room whether it be your Formal Living, Bedroom, or even your closet. They are as much about making a fashion statement as they are about comfort.  Below are our Top 5 Favorite Side Chairs for 2015.

#1  The Lance Chair

Lance Chair

Most everyone is familiar with the well loved Barcelona Chair designed by Mies Van Der Rohe in 1929.  As an icon of the modern movement, it is no surprise that the chair has inspired other designers to create their own versions of the quintessential chair.  The Lance Chair by Bernhardt has a unique take on the armless lounge chair style, with the addition of  brass metal legs and accents on the sides.  We love using this chair in office and bedroom settings as a comfortable reading and conversational chair.

#2 The Marley Chair

Marley Chair by Loft home

If you are looking for comfort and style wrapped into one pretty package, the Marley Chair should be at the top of your list.  With its Mid Century Styling and fun fabrics it is sure to be a hit in any Formal Living and Game Room setting.

#3  Recliner 74

Milo Baughman Recliner 74-DWR

What kind of a name is Recliner 74, you may ask?  So it doesn't have a fancy name, but we believe this chair speaks for itself with the word "style" written all over it. Being an Interior Designer, I am not an advocate of the overstuffed recliner that lays back with your head inches from the floor.  But I do believe that comfort and fashion can work together to create a space for all persons to enjoy.  This recliner is an original design developed in 1966 by the famed furniture designer Milo Baughman.  Many of Milo's designs are still in production today and are being built by the original company for whom they were designed - Thayer Coggins.

#4 The Pierce Chair

Pierce Chair by ZGallerie

Looking for a chair that offers a little more depth than your average side chair?  The Pierce Chair, with its extra deep seat and high arms provide the perfect setting to curl up and read a book or watch a movie.  We love to use this chair in bedrooms and secondary seating areas for your Great Room, such as that little private corner next to the window where you enjoy that last glass of wine while watching the sunset.

 #5  The T-Back Chair

T-Back Lounge Chair by Mil Baughman-Thayer Coggin

Allow me to introduce the T-Back Chair, another wonderful design by the famous Milo Baughman. As its name states, the chair has a metal bronze "T" on the back not only adding to the style of the chair, but for support as well.  For us, this chair fits seamlessly into a Home Office, Library or Formal Living space.

If you share a love of unique chairs, we would love to know what your favorite ones are as well.  There are so many wonderful ones out there, it was hard to narrow down to just 5 favorites.  Paula Ables Interiors is a great purchasing resource as well as design resource.  We have direct access to many furniture lines across the world and would love a chance to work with you on your next update/new home.  Give us a shout when you are ready to get things rolling!

5 Tips to get organized for Back to School by Paula

With the kids starting back to school, this is the perfect time to get everyone organized!

Consider the following home updates to help with all the back to school madness:

  1. Prepare the entry Point

    • Wherever your family comes and goes is bound to be one of the messiest places in your home. The kids throw their backpacks down, everyone leaves their dirty shoes sitting out and stacks of coats are piling up.
    • Consider mounting wall hooks or installing a shelving unit so that everyone has their own designated cubby and tabletop to set things on. This way everything will be tucked away.

mud room organization

  1. Post a Schedule

    • Invest in a large calendar for the kitchen or a common area.
    • OR consider putting chalkboard paint on a wall that everyone passes—there you can write upcoming events, to-do’s for the kids & fun messages! We love this idea.

chalk board organized

  1. Clean out the Closets

    • As the kids grow they need to be getting rid of and donating things that no longer fit them. Before you go back to school shopping, help them clean out their closets so you know exactly what they need when you shop!
    • Also clean out any old school books from last year so things don’t pile up and their storage drawers are clean and organized for this school year.

container store Organized

  1. Stock the Pantry

    • Organize the pantry with snack bins, fruit & veggie bins, etc. With organized bins that are stocked up, it will be easy for the kids to pack their lunch or help themselves to a snack when they get home!

back to school organized

  1. Organize YOUR office

    • While you’re doing all these things for the kids to get ready for back to school, why not take some time to organize your space? Besides, you’ll probably be getting more work done now with the kids out of the house, so you’ll want an organized area to work in.

desk organized

Are you wanting to get a little more organized but not sure where to start?  We are here to help!  Give us a call and we can get you on the road to organization.

6 Details to know when planning your Man Cave by Paula

The subject of the Man Cave has been hashed over on the internet for years.  As this was a "special request" blog subject from one of my friends, I thought I would come at it from a slightly different angle.  Instead of showing you some awesome Man Caves, I am going to show you some of the cool individual items you can have in your space and what size room you need for it to function properly.

1.  The Pool Table

stainless pool table for the Man Cave

A pool table has a rather large space requirement for it to function properly.  When measuring for a pool table you must know the size of your tables play surface plus the length of your pool cue x2.  Assuming you have purchased a 4' x 8' pool table (44" x 88" play surface) with average size pool cues of 58" each, your room needs to be a minimum of 17'-4" x 13'-11" to function properly.  Pool tables are available as small as 3'-6" x 7' up to the 4'-6" x 9' tournament table.  There is a perfect table for any size man/game room.

2.  Foosball table

Modern Foosball table for the Man Cave

Your search for the perfect modern Foosball Table is over.  Your average size Foosball Table is 2'-6" x 4'-8".  As you pull the players from side to side to protect your goal, you need plenty of space to pull your arms in and out and move from one end of the table to the other.  Minimum suggested play area for a Foosball Table is 7' x 8' however if you are a more competitive player you may want to add an additional foot to each side for a little more elbow room.

3.  Ping Pong Table/Table Tennis

Modern ping pong table for the Man Cave

Speaking of a competitive sport, I think Ping Pong ranks near the top of the list!  Ping Pong requires a large table and a lot of space at each end for the player to move back and forth as needed to keep the ball in play.  Though you may need 43' x 23' of space if you are a world champion table tennis player, the average home table can be placed in a space as small as 28' x 13'.  You may look at this number and say that is still a really large room and I totally agree with you on that.  Ping Pong is a game that can be adapted into a much smaller space when it is required.  The average table is 9' x 5'.  Keeping that in mind, any smaller space then what is recommended will only require you to be more creative with your strokes and adapt your style.  With this particular table if you have a disagreement about the the ball being in or out of play, just ask the table...she will tell you.

4.  Darts

Modern Dart Board for the Man Cave

Do you fancy yourself to be an awesome dart player?  No doubt you are.  Darts is a game of skill...as not everyone has this skill, make sure to place your dart board on a cork board or felt lined board to protect the surrounding walls.  Don't forget your chalk board for keeping score as well.  There are a couple of rules and regulations to hanging your board and marking your throw line.  When hanging your board, the center of the bullseye should be at 5'-8" high on your wall.  Make sure the board is mounted completely flat to the wall, not angled like a picture, with the 20 at the top.  For metal darts your throw line is 7'-9.25" from the wall.  Though some people say you can use a piece of tape to mark the line, I say NO!  If you are planning to have a dart board make a little extra effort and plan ahead.  If your room has wood flooring, have the installers place a special board at this line, slightly higher than the rest of the boards to mark your throw line, aka "hockey".  For concrete floors, place a tile line or paint a line in the designated area.  For carpet, have a "hockey" installed in the designated area and carpet all around it or install a different color carpet in your play area to give it a visual marker so others won't accidentally wander through your space. One more thing, if you have a hard floor surface, you may want to consider a rubber mat of some sort at the bottom of the board to catch any darts that may not stick firmly in the board when thrown. This will protect your darts and flooring at the same time.

5.  Video Games

gaming for the Man CaveThe needs and possibilities are endless when it comes to the modern day game console.  What is your game of choice?  Since we ARE talking about a Man Cave, we can assume the room will need a minimum of a 60" HD TV with a killer surround sound system (all hidden in cabinets and the walls, of course).  Game consoles can provide everything from your morning exercise routine and teaching you the latest dance moves to killing aliens in the jungle and racing jet skis.  If you are a proud owner of an XBox One you will need approximately 4'-6" to 6' of clear floor space in front of you and even more behind you depending on the game/activity.  Another important action item for this game, make sure your room/play area has bright, even lighting

6.  The Kegerator!!!

Modern Kegerator for the Man Cave

When my husband reads this blog he will be the first to tell me that I should have STARTED with the kegarator, rather than ending with it. Having a bar or kegarator in your Man Cave is an awesome and somewhat expected thing.  There are many ways you can express your individual taste and personality with this item.  Everywhere from the refrigeration unit that you choose to the beer you put in it.  My suggestion is to not be afraid-- be creative.  Don't go out and modify a freezer and throw some spouts on the top, take it to the next level. Another more extensive option includes creating a bar space to house all of your beverages of choice along with glasses and other bar wares. Space for this will vary from the 24" wide under the counter unit to the double and triple units.  Make it fun by using multi-colored LED tape lights to back light your glass shelves and put a mirror behind the shelves to give the appearance of a larger space.

If you would love a Man Cave in your existing home or would like to create one in your new home, we would love to help.  Our goal is to help create that perfect masculine space your buddies never want to leave.  If you are in envy of all of your neighbors, we have done our job.

3 ways to create a Woman Cave in your home by Paula

No boys-woman cave

Everyone has heard of the Man Cave.  The thought of this room often brings to mind pool tables, video games and stinky cigars...but how many of you ladies have thought of setting up a Woman's Cave?  The need for separate gender use spaces dates all the way back to our Kindergarten days.  Every kid has created a clubhouse at some point in his life whether it be a gathering of boxes taped together in the driveway, a blanket tent in the living room or an actual playhouse setting.  Once this space was created, there is often a sign added to the space stating NO (boys, girls, adults, etc.) ALLOWED!

DSC_0727 DSC_0733

When you think of the words "Woman Cave" what does it bring to mind?  Have you always wanted your own sewing room?  Craft room? Exercise room that inspires you?  Here are a few ideas to help spur your interest into a room you can call your own.

1. Craft or wrapping stations

You have a smaller house, but would like a space to add a wrapping station or craft area in your home.  You may not be able to pull of an entire room, but sometimes a closet within a room or room within a room will give you that coveted space without taking over your Master Bedroom.  Common items to use for this scenario are:  An armoire or a closet organizer.

closet-woman cave armoire 2-woman cave

2.  Dual purpose Guest/Sewing Room

You have a mid-size house with a guest room.  You do have guests visit every couple of months, but would like the room to be usable during the down times?  One way to make this room a multi-use room is by adding a wall bed.  This is not to be mistakenly associated with the old metal rod in your back sofa beds we were all forced to sleep on as children.  Times have changed.  The children that were forced to sleep on uncomfortable guest beds have all grown up and redesigned the system to make temporary beds more comfortable whether they be on a wall or folded into a sofa.

This room is an example of a guest room turn sewing room.  This particular client wanted a felt sheet to hang her quilting squares while she figured out the design.  Our solution was this great wall bed with the felt sheet rolled into the header above.  When the client is sewing, the room is large and spacious.  Everything she needs is within reach.  When the guest arrives, the machines and fabrics go away and out comes the beautiful guest bed with a nice fluffy mattress. So comfy you will have to start charging your guest rent to get them out of your house.

3.  Exercise Room

You have a large house and a couple of undefined rooms that have slowly become junk accumulation areas. This is a common issue for empty nesters. The kids are out on their own and the house suddenly feels twice the size it use to be. Instead of being sad that your little birdies have made nests of their own, celebrate the space and make it function for you. I don't think I was out of the house for more than an hour before my childhood bedroom became my parents new office space.

Follow my parents example and don't be shy.  Don't let those rooms sit idle, claim your new space.  Sharing a workout room in your house with your husband can be great, but women and men often have different fitness goals and it is hard to share equipment.  Make the space fit your exercise needs, whether it be yoga, karate or Pilates machines (they look surprising like old torture devises...just an observation).

The first step is to install the full wall to ceiling mirror, next decide what your flooring should be. Hardwood is easy to scratch and tile can often be too cold and hard on your legs. Consider installing a spongy rubber floor over your existing hardwoods/tile to help protect them from your equipment and protect you from additional strain and injury due to an unforgiving floor space. Once these two things are completed, bring on the exercise equipment.

yoga-woman cave

All rooms can benefit from a fresh coat of paint and maybe an updated light fixture to compliment the new purpose of the space as well. If one or all of the ideas above sounds intriguing to you, but you can't decide which direction to go, give us a call. We love helping to create new personal spaces for our clients that fit their specific needs.

Add color to your life with Forever Blue by Paula

Blue has forever been a human's favorite color. On average, people prefer blue over any other color.

It can be soothing or bold, but across the board it is aesthetically pleasing.  Blue gives you a sense of calmness and serenity.

And for that reason we love integrating blue into our interior design projects. Whether it's painting an accent wall, a whole room, or pulling in some bright blue chairs or pillows, the color blue always seems to compliment a design and add that final touch.

Below are some items that will help you incorporate blue into your home and add that pop of color you might be missing!

Just Blue Accents-with numbers

1. Book Nook Armchair - West Elm - Chairs are the easiest ways to add a pop of blue since the options are endless!   2. Decked out Dorm Room by Paula

This time of year a lot of kids are off to college for their first year in a new & exciting place! And while it's exciting for both the parents and the student, it's also nerve-racking, stressful, and even a little sad for everyone. You're sending your kid off to somewhere totally new, maybe far away from home, with a bunch of strangers and you just really hope they are complacent and happy--and your kid is really hoping this too! The best way to start off on the right foot? Create a comfortable living environment!

Help your child get settled in their new dorm or apartment and create an area where they will feel at home.

Below are some of our favorite Dorm Room essentials to use to design the perfect space for your child (or for yourself if you're the one going off to college).

(product details after the image)

Dorm Design with Numbers

Dorm Products List:

1. Navy Curtains - Urban Outfitters - Dorm windows typically aren't pretty so use these curtains to bring in color and provide extra privacy.   2. White Desk Shelf - Container Store - This shelf collapses so it's easy to move.   3. Table Lamps -  West Elm - With the harsh lighting of the dorm these accent lamps will create a much warmer atmosphere.   4. Cozy Bedding - Urban Outfitters - nice bedding is the quickest way to brighten your plain room and bring in your own style. Since you probably will only have this for a couple of years, don't spend too much! But don't cheap out completely...you'll already have trouble sleeping if sharing a room with a new roommate.   5. White Desk Chair - Overstock - Desk chairs don't have to be ugly or expensive. This white number is sleek and will modernize any space.   6. White Desk - Urban Outfitters -  a lot of dorm rooms now provide a desk, but if they don't you'll want to invest in at least a small table. There will definitely be nights you don't feel like going to the library and the desk will come in handy!   7. Mini Fridge - Home Depot - A necessity for all dorm rooms! You'll occasionally want your own groceries to help prevent that Freshman 15.   8. Tall Bookcase - Overstock -  If you can fit it, definitely consider purchasing a bookcase. You will be acquiring a lot more books and it will add an upscale accent.   9. Record Player - Urban Outfitters - Want to be the coolest new friend on campus? Get a record player.   10. Dishware Set - Urban Outfitters - Just like a mini fridge, dishware is a dorm necessity. An affordable set should get you all the way through College too.   11. Framed Pictures/Art - Urban Outfitters - Decorate the walls! Create a photo collage or buy a bunch of cool, inexpensive prints--it will make your place feel a lot more home-y.   12. Blanket - West Elm - A super soft throw will help get you through those long nights of studying.   13. Mongrammed Towels - PB Teen - if your dorm has a community bathroom, monogrammed towels are essential...then you'll know if someone steals your soft, fluffy towel.   14. Wall Shelf - Urban Outfitters - the more shelving & storage the better. And this one is perfect for a cool plant!   15. Accent Mirror - Urban Outfitters - Mirrors always make the room feel bigger & are great for putting by the door to look at on your way out to class!   16. Seating Poufs - West Elm -  you probably won't be spending too much time in your dorm, but you'll still want some extra seating for when your new friends come visit.   17. Floor Lamp - Urban Outfitters - Just like the table lamps, this will make your dorm environment much more pleasant & calming.   18. Sheepskin Rug - Pottery Barn - Something soft to put your feet on every morning, to make you want to get out of bed for class.   19. Blue Accent Chair - West Elm - If you can fit it, you'll appreciate this pop of color and a comfy place to sit when you need to read all those new books!

We hope this long list of items inspires you to create a dorm room where you or your child feel at home and relaxed!

3 Things to do when Creating your Home Office by Paula

One of the more common things we are seeing in houses today is a fully functional home office.  More companies are trying to save money on commercial office spaces by having employees work from home and more people are running small businesses from their home. I too went through the work from home phase and was fortunate to have a "work from home professional" (my hubby) to show me the ropes and what NOT to do.  He went through several work phases starting with the laptop table in bed, to watching TV in his pj's while working, to finally realizing he needed to get up, shower, dress for the day and sit at an actual desk to be the most productive.

Some of you reading this now are nodding your heads and laughing because you too have experienced one or more of these phases.  When deciding if it is time to create your new home office, here are a few things to keep in mind while setting up the room to make each day productive and comfortable.

Deck image-home office

1.  Ergonomics for your home office

There are several items to consider to keep you comfortable and healthy in your home office space.  Do a little research to see what works best for the job you do.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when starting your search.

  1. Usergo person-home officee a good chair with a dynamic back that is angled slightly to the rear.
  2. Top of monitor screen should be 2-3" above eye level
  3. No glare on screen; use an optical glass anti-glare filter where needed
  4. Sit at arms length from monitor; further if distance is comfortable and screen is readable.
  5. Rest feet on floor or on a stable foot rest (move feet frequently for circulation)
  6. Use a document holder, preferably in-line with the computer screen
  7. Wrists should be flat and straight in relation to forearms to use keyboard/mouse/input device
  8. Keeps arms and elbows relaxed close to body
  9. Center monitor and keyboard in front of you
  10. Use a negative tilt keyboard tray with an upper mouse platform or downward tilt-able platform adjacent to keyboard
  11. Use a stable work surface and stable (no bounce) keyboard tray
  12. Take frequent short breaks (micro breaks) and stretch.

2. Lighting for your home office

Lighting in your work space is important.  Having natural sunlight in your home office can make the difference between a happy workspace and a depressing, sleepy environment (see how I said "environment" here, because we all know that no work is being accomplished in a dark and dreary office).  Being able to enjoy a wonderful view of nature is a plus, but having any visual connection to the outside -even if it is just another building- can be beneficial to your work environment.

Having the right amount and type of light is important to prevent eye strain and this is achieved through layering light sources.  Besides natural sunlight it is important to have general overhead lighting to provide an even sheet of light over the entire space to minimize shadows and severe dark to light contrasts that can strain your eyes over time.  Another thing to consider is a good desk/task light to provide additional, focused lighting.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when lighting your work space:desk light-home office

  • Make sure your lamp has enough light output to cover your entire work surface. Having the ability to adjust the placement and direction of the light is ideal.
  • Place the lamp on the opposite side of your dominant hand to reduce shadows when writing or reading.
  • Position your computer screen so it is angled away from the natural light by day and away from the light beam of the desk lamp at night. This will reduce the reflection on your computer screen.
  • Use task lights combined with general lighting for reading, writing or drawing, this helps to avoid eye strain.

3.  Incorporate personal touches for inspiration in your home office

All work and no play can make anyone a dull boy/girl.  Make sure to include things in your space that inspire you.  Whether it is photos of your family, a beautiful piece of art or a mood board to help spur your next brilliant idea.  This is your space, use it how it works best for you.

There are many more factors to consider when creating your perfect home office space, it is impossible to cover them all in one blog.  We at Paula Ables Interiors pride ourselves in our ability to listen to your wants and needs and create a wonderful, aesthetically pleasing environment that functions just the way you need it to.  We want you to love the space you are in, whatever that room might be.  Do you have a drab office space in need of some love?  Or are you considering working from home and need to transform a room you can stand to be in for 8 hours, or longer, a day?  We would love to help you get there.

6 Steps to Remodeling your Kitchen by Paula

Whether you have lived in your home for 10 years or 10 weeks, everyone at some point wants to upgrade a part of their home.  We are here to show you how to get from Drab to Fab in 6 easy steps! Kitchen crop

1.  Assess your needs:

What is it about your current kitchen that you do not like?  Is it the color of the cabinets?  Would you prefer to have an open bar for guest to sit and it is currently a wall?  Would you like a larger kitchen?  Is there a way to add an island without breaking the bank?  These are just a few questions to get your juices flowing.

Before Kitchen After Kitchen
BEFORE                                                                              AFTER
(this BEFORE photo shows a dated, DIY two-tone paint.  The AFTER photo shows the upgraded taupe oil based paint. This simple paint change took the kitchen from 80's trendy to simple elegance)

2.  Come up with a budget:

No matter your budget, there is always the possibility to upgrade something.  If you only have a couple thousand to spend you can plan to repaint, add knobs and pulls to your cabinets or replace a few appliances.  Maybe you have a little more than that and would like new tile for the backsplash to go with your new counter tops and plumbing fixtures.  These are all great ways to breathe fresh air into a worn out space on a slightly tighter budget.  If you have been saving for an upgrade for years and you are ready to make your dream kitchen come true, then lets give the whole room a face lift!  I know the first thing you are thinking is "What is all of this going to cost?"  That is a tough question depending on what part of the country you live and your personal skill set.  I am a firm believer in hiring professionals to do the work rather than personally laying $80 a square foot mosaic tiles to save $200 in labor just because my neighbor said it was easy and risk a less-than-perfect finished product.  When setting your budget, plan to hire professional trades to walk you through the process.  They are not cheap but their knowledge and experience are invaluable when it comes to getting the finished product you are striving to accomplish.

 BEFORE                                                                                AFTER

3.  Do your Decorative Diligence:

There is a little homework to do, but think of it as helping fine tune your wants and needs through photos and blog posts.  Some fun sites to browse are Houzz, Pinterest, and Instagram.  Start collecting photos.  Make sure to mark on each photo what it is you like about it: paint color, pretty tile, the feel of the space, etc.  These are all great tools that you can later share with a professional to give them a better direction on the final product you would like to see.

 BEFORE                                                                                AFTER

4.  Hire a professional:

There is no reason to go it alone. Hiring a professional will save you time and money on your project as well as give you that picture perfect room you have been dreaming of all these years. Some professionals that would be an asset to your remodel project are a registered Interior Designer, Architect and Contractor. Interior Designers know more than what counter top will look best with what tile. They are able to see a space as it should be and are familiar enough with the project to help lead you step by step from beginning to end. We are the listeners, the organizers, the planners. It is our job to get you from your inspiration photo to the finished project as seamlessly as possible, all the while presenting you with ideas that you may not have considered before.  Depending on where you live you may need to hire an Architect to complete a set of construction documents for permitting purposes.  This is only true if you are moving walls, plumbing, lights, etc.  Check your neighborhood and city rules before beginning your project.  Contractors will save you a lot of headache and stress.  Their job is to keep the project moving by making sure each trade is in the right place at the right time.  The Interior Designer and the Architect have the ideas and the Contractor has the skill to pull them off.

5.  Start shopping:

Now that you have counted your money, figured out what you want, done your research and hired a couple of professionals to lead the way, there is more fun to be had. It is time to start shopping. If you have hired an Interior Designer you can choose if you would like them to present a handful of options to you or if you would like to join them while shopping. Either way is fun for us and for you. We have a system to help lead you through the selections process. No stone will be left unturned. (We really will ask you where the most convenient spot is to reach for your Saran Wrap.) Once selections are made, we organize the information, get the bids lined up with all of the vendors and hand the info over to the contractor for purchasing.

6. Sit back and watch the magic:

Even though you may be without your kitchen for a couple of weeks up to a couple of months, the final reveal will be worth the wait!  Your contractor has placed the orders and the Interior Designer will be in and out periodically to supervise and offer solutions as each trade is brought in to do their part.  The next thing you know you are enjoying your wonderful new kitchen!

HGTV Designer Showcase-July 2015 by Paula

Paula Ables Interiors is excited to be included in the HGTV Designers Showcase Series.  This wonderful article by Morgan Galbraith features our Spanish Oaks Hill Country Contemporary House on the outskirts of Austin, Texas.

Comfortable, Contemporary House Blurs Lines Between Indoors and Outdoors

A young newlywed couple wanted a comfortable, contemporary home that complemented their outdoor lifestyle. Designer Paula Ables drew on the property's surrounding nature as she created a home that the couple could enjoy for years to come.

Spanish Oaks Contemporary House-designer

When a young couple approached Paula Ables for help creating a home where they could feel comfortable for a long time, the Austin, Texas designer looked to their love of the outdoors for inspiration.

The newlyweds' property was the perfect spot to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living thanks to its proximity to a greenway and wildlife.

“It was all about bringing the outside in, keeping that comfortable feel, making sure all of the furniture was oriented in the right direction so that you were able to enjoy the wildlife and enjoy the green belt beyond with the quietness and serenity of the area,” Ables says.

HGTV photos-designer

Soaring ceilings and oversized windows let in bright, natural light and views of the surrounding Texas landscape. Ables maintained an open floor plan among the kitchen, living and dining rooms to take advantage of the light and the views.

To further blend inside and out, Ables selected a neutral color palette for the home that complemented its surroundings and kept windows bare of coverings.

“We tried to keep the color palette fairly similar so that walking from one space to the other wasn't a shock to your senses,” Ables says. “It was always just a nice soft even flow from one space to the next.”

A stunning swimming pool and outdoor living room with fireplace offer spots for the couple to be outside with their friends and family. Inside, Ables selected easy-to-clean materials so that the constant movement between indoors and outdoors wouldn't result in hard-to-clean messes.

"We like to try to take the feel of the outside and bring it inside so that the house flows really softly and simply for entertaining as well as for their general use."    -Interior Designer Paula Ables

Ables helped accentuate the separation of the master bedroom and other private living areas from the more public living spaces with a breezeway to offer the couple privacy when they want it and to give the home the look of one that had evolved over time.

“They wanted to feel like the house was pieced together like it had been built over time rather than all at one time,” Ables says.

Small details such as mismatched flooring tiles, rectangular sinks and hidden tape lighting seem almost insignificant up close. As a whole, they offer a sense of history to the home.

“I think it's those little details and hidden elements that give it so much more character and so much more interest,” Ables says.
