Designer tip: Are all WHITE paint colors created equal?! No way!

One of the most common questions that I get from people is, “What is your favorite WHITE?” I would no sooner pick a favorite child (and I have 4 to choose from)then a favorite white. All whites are not created equal. Every paint company has a “base white” color and within that base the color will either tint towards Blue, Red or Green. Now, before you tell me I am crazy, go to home depot and pick out 10 whites, lay them side by side and see what jumps out at you on each color. A white that you think is super light and pure may turn out to be a cool white (blue base) and actually look a little creamy compared to another white from another company.

Here is an example of some of our favorite white paints from Benjamin Moore:

What colors do you see? They are all called white…

When choosing a White for your room, whether it is for the walls, cabinets, ceiling, etc. there are several factors to consider:

  1. What are the other permanent items in this room? Do you have pre-existing bookshelves or cabinets that you do not intend to change the color? Whatever that item is, this is where you will begin with picking your white.
  2. How white do you want to go? Some people when they think of white are actually thinking of a soft comfortable warm creamy white others may be thinking of a white so bright you almost have to wear your shades inside! Find your comfort level and move on from there.
  3. While working on your remodel or new construction home, have you already selected your counter top? Your tile? As Mother Nature in her infinite wisdom only created a certain combination of colors, it is always best to start your selections with whatever natural (or unnatural) stone you are selecting for your home, then pick your tiles and paint colors from there.

So, I have given you some criteria on picking your perfect white. Now lets get down to business.

Color Layouts

Here are the tile/counter top/ paint layouts for a couple of our current projects. Notice how the counter top not only dictates the white we choose, but also every other color in the layout. If you have a warm white counter top such as Ceasarstone Eggshell Quartz , you have to go with a warm white paint with warm color accents, whether it is navy blue, grey, orange, etc. This beautiful layout gives you that white on white so many people are craving in their lives right now.

For our next layout, here is a fun natural Marble named Calcatta Gold. Don’t let the word GOLD fool you, though. This striking counter top offers a milky white background with blue-grey veining giving off more of a “cool color” vibe. We love adding a little Gold accent in the hardware with this particular counter top as well as bringing in our cooler white options from Benjamin Moore. Don’t be afraid to throw in a little color to your spaces. Color can give a space more interest and fun.
